Ferrari F12 Berlinetta: Performance and Technical Specifications

on

The F12 Berlinetta marries the characteristics of a Formula One car with the most pleasing aspects of a road car. The F12 is extremely compact, short and light and it feels like you have it in your hands straight off. It enables even the least expert driver to get the very best out of it, nearly touching the limit without any special difficulties. Take the example of the acceleration: going up to almost 9,000 rpm might sound hard. But Ferrari has created a perfectly balanced ratio that, together with the rapidity of the F1 double clutch gearbox, lets you rev up to the maximum, even in low gear without upsetting the car or giving you the sensation that it is slipping away from you.

The new Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, by combining lightness, reduction of size and a lower center of mass has a natural vocation for high performance. The Performance team has worked on the individual sub-systems, developing them in an integrated way with the aim of ending up with the best performing car ever. The sub-system is the totality of all hardware elements related to performance (suspension, tires, brakes, engine, gearbox, and chassis) with the related control systems (E-Diff, F1 Trac, VCS/ABS, SCM). The outcome of the integrated hardware/software development is to enjoy to the full the potential of the car and get the maximum out of the driving experience. The simulation process applied to each subsystem plays a fundamental role in supporting this development. Simulation makes it possible to evaluate various technical solutions in advance, exploring very different scenarios so as to identify a limited number of promising hardware / software set-ups, to discard unproductive solutions and produce specifications for the test components. It is at this stage that testing begins in Maranello surrounding as well as on two benchmark tracks: Fiorano and Nrburgring. At this stage, the test driver contributes with his experience and sensitivity in defining the optimum set-up for performance and driving pleasure. He is supported also by virtual instruments such as the driving simulator. Thanks to this procedure, the Ferrari achieved excellent levels of performance combined with driving ease and enjoyment unheard in a 12-cylinder front-engined car.
