What to look out for when buying a used Porsche

on

The key when selecting a used Porsche to be your new pride and joy? Research, research, research!

It may well have taken you a long time to save for your new Porsche and no doubt you have heard contradicting stories from Porsche owners giving you their own hints and tips on what to look out for. Well hopefully this quick guide will help point you in the direction of the main things to take into consideration when making your selection.

Firstly, set yourself a budget and decide which model you would like and stick to it. It is very easy to get distracted by other models as you are browsing through used Porsche magazines and forecourts and all of a sudden you’ve blown your budget.

Service history is very important when selecting any used car let alone a used Porsche so make sure it has one and that any notes made during these services have been taken into account and actioned if necessary. You wouldn’t marry someone who couldn’t account for the last ten years of their life or look after themselves properly would you? The same principal applies when looking for a used Porsche.

Once you have decided on the one for you, take it for an inspection at the garage where you will be having it regularly serviced and get a full report. This report should include any items that may need rectifying now and also a list of any issues that will need attention in the future. This list can then sometimes be used as a bargaining chip against the price, but is primarily for the use of making an educated decision as to whether it is worth investing in. Try not to let your heart take over – make a sensible, balanced decision.

Other items to take into consideration when purchasing your used Porsche are the cosmetics and the mileage. When looking at the cosmetics please bare in mind that any cosmetic changes that are made will almost always be noticeable in the future – especially when it comes to paint and bodywork. Any mechanical changes made to your used Porsche will not. When it comes to the mileage of the vehicle, take into account what you will be using your used Porsche for – is it for everyday use, going touring, race days or showing off at shows? If it is the latter then it doesn’t really matter if you buy a used Porsche with low mileage as it won’t be doing that many miles anyway, but if you are purchasing a used Porsche for everyday use it is worth considering choosing a model with higher mileage and a full service history as this is what it has been used to.
